Rhos House Surgery
Mountain Ash
Overview
Trefoil worked in partnership with Cooke & Arkwright to undertake the refurbishment of Rhos Surgery in Mountain Ash, delivering the design scheme, dilapidations and comprehensive fit-out works ahead of the surgery’s reopening.
The project involved the complete transformation of the existing premises, creating a refreshed, functional and professional healthcare environment suitable for patients, staff and day-to-day clinical operations.
The works incorporated everything from the initial strip-out and preparation through to new electrical and lighting installations, flooring, ceilings, decoration, access control and the installation of specialist medical facilities.

Design Approach
The design approach focused on creating a clean,
practical and welcoming healthcare environment, while ensuring the
refurbished premises met the functional requirements of a modern medical
practice.
Durable and easy-to-maintain finishes were selected
throughout, with carpet and vinyl flooring used to provide appropriate
solutions for different areas of the surgery.
Particular consideration was given to accessibility and
hygiene, including the installation of DDA-compliant toilets and medical
hand-wash stations.
The reception area was also redesigned with a new
reception counter, providing a more modern and functional first point of
contact for patients.

Challenges
The project required the transformation of an existing building, meaning careful consideration had to be given to the condition of the premises and the requirements of the new fit-out.
Key challenges included:
- Coordinating a comprehensive refurbishment within an existing building
- Preparing floors and walls for new finishes
- Integrating new electrical, lighting and emergency lighting systems
- Providing appropriate facilities for a healthcare environment
- Coordinating ceilings, flooring, decoration and specialist installations
- Ensuring accessibility requirements were incorporated
- Delivering the works to enable the surgery to reopen as planned
Effective coordination between Trefoil, Cooke & Arkwright and the various trades was essential to achieving the required finish and programme.

Construction & Delivery Stratergy
The works were delivered as a coordinated refurbishment and
fit-out programme, progressing from the initial strip-out and preparation
through to the installation of new services, finishes and specialist
facilities.
Existing areas were stripped back and prepared before new
flooring, ceilings and decorative finishes were installed. Electrical,
lighting, emergency lighting and access-control systems were coordinated
alongside the architectural and interior elements of the refurbishment.
Floor and wall preparation was undertaken to provide
suitable substrates for the new carpet and vinyl finishes, helping to achieve a
consistent and high-quality final appearance.
The delivery strategy placed particular emphasis on coordination,
quality and attention to detail, ensuring the various elements of the
fit-out came together as a cohesive healthcare environment ready for
occupation.
