Overview
The Bell at Skenfrith, a former 17th century Welsh coaching inn, is one of Wales’ most renowned boutique hotels. The Bell at Skenfrith is on the outskirts of the tiny Welsh village of Skenfrith which lies on the banks of the river Monnow.
At the end of last year and again this February’s after Storm Dennis, major floods hit Monmouthshire and the surrounding areas. The Bell was one of the main areas to be hit hard. This led to The Bell having to be closed for 11 months.
Challenge
The floods caused significant and extensive damage internally as well as externally to The Bell. In particular, extensive works were required to the ground floor and the cellar. Due to the extent of the water damage, a full strip-out was undertaken to the damaged finishes, which meant rendering had to be removed and allowed to be aired out. Flooring, skirtings, doors, bars and furniture had to be stripped out as they were unable to be salvaged. All the necessary preparation was undertaken by Trefoil Interiors before the refurbishment could begin.
All bespoke works including replacement bars, wine racks, reception desks, vanity units, new solid oak door sets including French doors and skirtings etc. were made by our in-house fitters. Trefoil Interiors installed a hardwearing wood effect ceramic tile, laid in a striking herringbone effect throughout. The newly refurbished wine cellar which had to undergo a full refurbishment after being one of the worst hit areas.
The Bell was carefully and thoughtfully decorated throughout, complementing the oak beams and antique furniture. Contemporary comfy sofas and chairs together give The Bell its relaxing and easy atmosphere. The bars and restaurant have all been redesigned and now have a much more light, airy and spacious atmosphere.
